September 5, 2026

September reminds me of magenta and Mexican pink, shades that are still warm but will gradually become more violet with the cold blue that will soon arrive. September has that discreet joy of those who don’t want to go back to school but are eager to start a new school year and see their friends. There is a sense of movement in the city, and central Madrid returns to its usual vibrancy. September has that feeling of a new year, with good resolutions and renewed energy after the summer break.

For me, there are three moments throughout the year that represent a new beginning: January 1, which marks the New Year; September, as an exciting start to a new season; and March, with the end of winter and the beginning of spring, which also represents a new beginning: the start of the cycle of life in nature. This is true, but I also want to emphasize something: all these changes and seasonal beginnings come from outside us; they happen whether we want them to or not. Nature, the cycle of life, or society determines them. What does depend on me (and on you) is living each day with the same enthusiasm, without needing the calendar to tell us how we should feel or when it is time to get excited. I like September, and I want to carry the same enthusiasm of new beginnings into October and beyond. Every day is, or can be, a new year in my life.
